I am aware of the "create and jump to nl" shortcut but still it seems annoying to have to do that. One bad thing for VSCode is that when intellisense pops up in Go the first thing it suggests is always append (the intellisense seems to popup everywhere when just entering a space literal) making the enter key unavailible (as it would inser the append statement). Also I yet have to find a feature in IntelliJ that I do not have in VSCode (and that is essential to developing). In IntelliJ I can't even edit them and for retriving their values I have to wait couple of seconds in that procedure to let IntelliJ load them which takes away lots and lots of times. In VSCode I can just enter variables I want to be watched (on the fly) and edit them (on the fly, even if editing them is a bit buggy). On the other side VSCodes debugger (the dvelve plugin) seems to be way more matured than the IntelliJ Go plugin. In VSCode you actually have to start the "(" on a call or just open the docs to see the documentation which is kinda frustating as it takes lots of times in total. To explain a bit: I found that IntelliJ honestly only has one advantage over VSCode, and that being that you can easily get the documentation of a functio nwithout switchting the window.

I would ask you guys what are you using and why ? And why (if) would you use rather IntelliJ than vscode/atom/vim/emacs in a commercial environment (expect for the obvious stuff like huge project management git and svn etc.) I was using VSCode till then but somehow every bigger company seems to rely on either Eclipse or IntelliJ (and I understand mostly it's for Java but anyway).

It feels like C# with a bit of Basic syntax mixed in.Īnyway, I recently saw that JetBrains give out their products (specifically IntelliJ) for free for students so I grabbed a copy of it.

The language admittingly is exactly what Pike did say in one talk calling it "not exciting but efficient". I am now coding in Go since about 2 months.
